Rohai Dojo’s 27th Annual Kata Tournament Coming March 15th

The Kata Tournament is right around the corner! Time to get to work polishing your empty hand and weapons katas. Add to the fun by joining up for a 2- or 3-person team kata – or create an original kata for the Open Kata division!

This year’s Kata Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, 2025, starting at 10am (doors open at 9). There will be divisions by age and rank – with several different divisions for Adults, Teens, and Children. Trophies will be awarded to the top three winners in each division.

As always, this event will provide multiple opportunities for participants to step up, take the challenge, and show their best. There are separate divisions for traditional empty hand kata; weapons kata; open kata*, team kata**, and family team (parent/child) kata.

  • Open kata is for creative kata presentation, including kata to music, or an original kata of your own creation.
  • Team kata is 2 or 3 participants performing kata together or with applications.

Online registration is live! If you’re eligible for multiple events – enter as many as you wish! Be sure to register by March 7th to avoid the late registration fee. Are you registering from another dojo or martial art style? See below for advice on rank/level equivalents.

Registration Help: Choosing the right belt color/level.

Different martial arts use different belt/rank colors – or sometimes use the same colors to mean different things! Here’s a rough guide to the registration options on our tournament registration form, to help you choose the best equivalent to our Cuong Nhu ranks.

  • Yellow stripes/Yellow Belt/Purple Stripes ranks are beginner and advanced beginner children, age 6 to 11. These may also be white belts.
  • Purple belt/Blue stripes/Blue belt are intermediate to advanced intermediate youth, generally age 8 to 12. Some older kids may compete in teen or adult divisions.
  • White belt/Green stripes are teen/adult beginners and advanced beginners.
  • Green belt/Brown stripes are intermediate teen/adult kyu ranks.
  • Brown belt/Black stripes are advanced level kyu ranks.
  • Black belt and above are seasoned teen and adult practitioners. They may be serving as judges as well as competitors.
